Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tongan Elementary School is located in Fenyuan Township, Changhua County, Taiwan. It is located on the east side of Bagua Mountain, about 200 meters above sea level, and is a hilly area. Administratively, it is under the jurisdiction of Fenyuan Township, Changhua County. The school was founded on April 1, 1922 and was named 'Fenyuan Public School Tong'anliao Branch'. In order to make it convenient for students to study, villagers from Tong'an Village and Zhonglun Village jointly established Tong'an Primary School, which became the second oldest primary school in Fenyuan Township and has a history of 102 years. Due to the declining birth rate, the number of students was only 28 in 2017. However, in recent years, due to the development of popular special courses, the number of students has gradually increased to 64.

2. Summary of Our Project

Mr. Liu Qizhong, the founder of Da Jia Charity Foundation, was successful in his career, so he called together his friends and companies to help poor families in the society or students who need to realize their dreams. At first they could only help those whom the government's social system could not take care of. As more and more members join Da Jia Charity Foundation, more and more people can be helped. Da Jia Charity Foundation has begun to provide long-term support to rural schools in a planned manner, so that these schools can develop their own characteristics in order to retain more high-quality teachers and students. This is the so-called Dreamer Project. Although Mr. Liu Qizhong is no longer in charge of the affairs of the Da Jia Charity Foundation due to his advanced age, the Da Jia Charity Foundation still continues to carry out social welfare activities and has received awards from the Ministry of the Interior.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Since we had to wait until the end of the semester to have time to visit the Da Jia Charity Foundation, this time happened to be close to the Lunar New Year in Taiwan. Many companies and kind-hearted people donated a lot of supplies during this period, which required the staff of Da Jia Charity Foundation to transport and sort the supplies to various places, and they were busy almost from morning to night every day. We contacted the General Manager and CEO several times, and originally hoped that both of them could be interviewed on the same day, but because they were really too busy, we had to split it into two sessions. Fortunately, they were able to make time in the end.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In the process of visiting and discussing the Da Jia Charity Foundation, what impressed me most was the feedback of kindness. Both the Director-General and the CEO mentioned that although they have to raise funds, visit families and deliver supplies to the homes of the beneficiaries, these tasks are busy and tiring, but the driving force that keeps them going is when the beneficiaries spend their come back and help others after overcoming difficulties or achieving dreams. We are particularly touched by this kind feedback.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1. Language: Through many discussions and meetings, we improved our skills on communication and problem solving. We could focus on problems, and properly provide suggestions. From many interviews, we built data analysis and key point summary. With the guidance of the teachers, we could finally write and edit the articles from different angles and using various narrative ways. We also learned to read and appreciate other writers’ thoughts and creativity to develop our own writing and language expression. 2.Social Studies: We learned a lot about social care and the government's welfare system. In the production of webpage, we learned team work, enhanced our data ability, increased our interests and research spirit on subject production, cultivated our communication ability, participated in various activities, and demonstrated the spirit of participating in the society. 3.Arts and Humanities: It is very important to pick the appropriate background color for making the website. By using artwork software, we learned how to match colors, and how to create artwork. Chromatics taught us that different colors give people different feeling.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1.We learned how to cooperate with people, and help one another. Also, we learned to face problems together without avoiding it. 2. We learned to take good notes and record interview content to avoid losing memory. These became very good references in writing articles later. 3. We learned how to appropriately utilize various software to create and edit artwork, so that the webpage would not appear monotonous.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Our role is to be the promotion ambassador of the Da Jia Charity Foundation. Through on-site and online interviews, document compilation, and website production, we promote the spirit of doing good and helping others of the Da Jia Charity Foundation. We also promote the importance of doing good and helping others, so that everyone understands that only when everyone is well together can everyone be well, and that when you have the ability, you must give back to society.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The residents in the Tongan Elementary School district are mainly engaged in farming, and most of the children are raised and cared for by their primary parents. They are a relatively economically disadvantaged group. In order to provide students here with better learning courses and develop their expertise, the Da Jia Charity Foundation has been donating funds for a long time to allow students to practice archery. These students have achieved good results in numerous competitions through long-term and planned practice. Many students also go to schools with archery teams after graduation to continue developing their expertise.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We would like to thank the school counselors who are also members of Da Jia Charity Foundation for their assistance during this discussion. Through their connections, we were able to smoothly visit the chairman and CEO, and also got to know the group of Da Jia Charity Foundation better and complete our work.
