Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our community is a reflection of India’s deep-rooted cultural values, where love, respect, and care for the elderly are at the core of family life. In every corner of this diverse country, elders are regarded with the utmost reverence, their wisdom and presence seen as treasures. The bond between the younger and older generations is at the core of our culture, ensuring that the elderly are never forgotten or overlooked. From the meals prepared with love to the stories shared over chai, our community thrives on compassion and respect for those who came before us. This sense of care extends beyond our homes, as we work together to create a world where every elder is valued and loved. This is our community—a place where love for our elders is a tradition and a way of life..

2. Summary of Our Project

'Umeed' is a Hindi word and, here, it is driven by a simple yet powerful goal: to create an opportunity for youngsters to fulfil the hopes of elderly individuals. Thus, Umeed aims to be a one-stop platform for young individuals to connect with old age homes, visit the elderly, and engage them in meaningful activities. Rooted in the deep respect for elders that Indian traditions uphold, Umeed seeks to bridge the growing disconnect between generations and provide care, companionship, and engagement for senior citizens. Extensive research, including visits to old age homes, has shed light on the challenges faced by the elderly, particularly the loneliness that often surrounds them. To address this, a variety of activities have been designed to keep them engaged while also enhancing their mental and physical well-being. Beyond supporting senior citizens, Umeed is also working towards connecting orphanages with old age homes. Plans are underway to establish an NGO that will bring both orphans and the elderly under one roof—creating a nurturing environment filled with love, care, and companionship for all.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

During our project, we faced several challenges, including restricted visiting hours requiring prior approvals, prohibitions on home-cooked food, and insufficient funds to provide the best possible donations and ambiance. Additionally, some individuals were unwilling to participate in our survey, which we addressed by expanding our survey reach and utilizing Google Forms for data collection. On the technical front, we encountered glitches in coding and graphic design, which we overcame through additional training, teacher assistance, and AI tools. Our codes were continuously revised, making the process time-intensive but ultimately successful. Participating in the International Schools CyberFair has been a transformative experience, inspiring students to recognize their responsibility toward society and motivating more young minds to contribute to meaningful change.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

“Our passion is to foster empathy in action” — is what inspired the team to unlock innovative avenues to foster true upliftment of spirit for everyone involved in this endeavour.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our project on ‘Create and Unite’ was designed to align directly with international standards and required coursework by integrating interdisciplinary research with hands-on, authentic learning. By exploring how technology can unite generations, we applied core academic skills such as critical thinking, digital literacy, web development, research and data analysis, content creation, app building, collaborative problem-solving and report writing — key components in current STEM, Social Studies, Moral Science, Languages and Communication curricula. This research not only supported required coursework by connecting theoretical concepts with real-world applications, but it also fostered a broader understanding of global citizenship and community engagement. Ultimately, our work met curriculum standards by encouraging students to use innovative digital tools to bridge generational divides, while also reinforcing academic and social-emotional learning objectives.

The students also learned various new skills such as coding, video editing, mass communication skills, content creation, graphic design, teamwork, etc. The team practiced many group concepts, the foremost of which was collective identity as everyone was driven towards one specific goal. The teachers acted as mentors and the students worked together under their guidance. Hence, communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution were easily achieved by the motivated team.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

• More than 10 workstations used for the CyberFair project, across 2 computer labs at the school. • The connection speed was 75 mb/s when connected from the LAN network of our campus. School Wi-Fi was also used. • More than 90% of our workforce used the internet at home. They used 10 laptops - 7 simple laptops, 3 high-end laptops and 1 Linux server at home. • During visits, interviews, or other interactions, mobile phone cameras were used for video recording and voice recording • VS code (as a code editor) was downloaded from the internet free of cost and • Oral interviews were conducted, and responses were recorded. • Google Forms were used to collect data from various respondents. • In the end, Hostinger Server was used to make the site public and domain name was created. • All tools were most valuable as the final product could not have been achieved if even one tool was absent. However, Vs Code and internet access remained essential components for our website. • Web development frameworks and libraries such as three.js, next.js, jQuery, angular.js, webGL, etc. played an indispensable role in developing the website. Designing software like Canva and Photoshop along with storage systems for content management were extremely important.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We are proud to call ourselves the ‘Uambassadors’ of Umeed. Throughout the project, the team has worked tirelessly to create a platform where we could extend our support to those who traversed many challenging paths and lend an empathetic ear to their lost stories. As Uambassadors, the students’ mission extended beyond just research — we became the voice for elderly welfare, advocating for their dignity, well-being, and social inclusion. The students actively engaged in both online and offline initiatives to amplify our cause. Our website serves as a comprehensive platform, sharing stories, traditions, and challenges faced by the elderly, fostering empathy and awareness. To bridge the gap between generations, the students conducted field visits to old age homes, interacting firsthand with the residents, understanding their struggles, and documenting their wisdom.

Beyond digital efforts, the students extended our outreach by launching Google Forms, enabling people to volunteer, donate, or contribute in any capacity. Through word-of-mouth advocacy, social media promotions, and community discussions, the students encouraged more people to recognize the importance of elderly welfare and act.

While interviewing teachers and neighbours, two teachers expressed the wish to accompany students during one of their visits to old age homes and donated necessary items and provisions. A neighbour of a team member also accompanied him on his visits and became a regular volunteer. They were extremely impressed with the initiative and even brought more friends as volunteers. One volunteer celebrated his birthday at an orphanage home and another celebrated at an old age home. The students have been receiving accolades and praise for their initiative all around our community, being awarded for their initiative and receiving positive testimonials from volunteers.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Event though the website has not been up very log, the impact on our community can be felt and seen still as the idea of UMEED had been in the making and actions towards it were already underway. From an idea to the execution, from one mind to a team, the students became unstoppable. It led to an unparalleled passion to uplift the community in more ways than one. It inspired them to be more compassionate and supportive in our interactions with older generations. After learning about the adversities of seasoned individuals, not just the team members but the whole local community saw the embers of their lost life and aimed to make a collective effort to restore their lost shine. Through UMEED’s web pages, interviews, and interactions, many people became volunteers and joined the students in their visits. People have visited our website for information on our initiatives and have applauded the VINTAGE VETERANS app, developed by the UMEED team. The team is now connected to organisations, local community members, and numerous volunteers who make change one visit at a time.

Apart from this, the school students and young adults have also been inspired to revive Indian traditions and two families even brought their grandparents/parents to stay with them. The interviewed people began to visit their parents more and connected with them regularly. Through this initiative, the community will be impacted positively and will realise the value of joint families against the newfound concept of nuclear families. It will realise the importance of age and experience possessed by the elderly. The volunteer parents have also begun realising that grandparents have a positive and fulfilling impact on children and have begun visiting old age homes after interacting with UMEED team.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

It is true that ‘Man is no island’. Similarly, without the help of our community, our project could not have borne fruits. The help of old age home managements, student volunteers, various officials from orphanages, school management, neighbours and parents has helped us every step of the way so that our endeavour doesn’t fall short of support and encouragement. We did not just receive words of wisdom but, many a time, even financial help when we were falling short of funds. Ms. Jayshree Dutta and Ms. Sakshi Arora were impressed with our initiative and accompanied us on our visits to old age homes, providing us with donations, transportation and provisions for the elderly. We express special thanks to them. Help was also received from willing parents who allowed many student volunteers to take part in this initiative and even visited old age homes with them. Special thanks to Ms. Bhawna from Robinhood Army and Principal Ms. Reema Rai, who inculcated this thought process in us by arranging visits to both orphanages and old age homes occasionally. Humble thanks also to Aravali International School management as it has always encouraged and empowered us to strive for more and to make a change. They have fostered in us humanity and integrity through not just the curriculum but teaching us acts of kindness. Students also received help from their relatives who were software engineers and coders. At times, when students were stuck with some code, Ms. Neha Verma, cousin of team member Ritwik, helped students. The team expresses sincere gratitude to all people who helped in this journey of developing UMEED.
