Project Overview

1. Description of Our Team

Description of our Team: Our names are Antonia, Anne Marie, and Sarah. We are all 14 years old at St. Theresa’s in Austin Texas. We were assigned to work together in our Commapps elective class. We work together really well and are working on it every Monday and Wednesday. Anne Marie is in charge of how we can help, Sarah talks about the causes of hunger, and I talk about the health of the poor. We all contribute to the special effects and photos. Mrs. Pesqueda is our teacher and leader.

2. Summary of Our Project

We are working on hunger in America. Things like how it effects people in America like death and malnourishment. Also, about different ways we can help like charities. Also, there are things about how the poor are fat and not skinny and because they don’t eat healthy. It has pictures and videos that also regard hunger in America.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We had many obstacles to overcome. We were especially having trouble finding uncopyrighted images to use for our site. Another challenge that we faced was incorporating technology into our website through sites like Flash Vortex and Animoto.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Doors to Diplomacy had given us the opportunity to take a look at our community and to see what is really going on with the hunger situation.

6. How did your activities and research for this Doors to Diplomacy Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We learned how to put on flash vortex and made the site look really good. We learned teamwork skills like having to talk at home or text about the project. The Internet has allowed us to communicate well and offered many tools to help us complete the project.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your Doors to Diplomacy project?

We used at least 3 computers per class. We texted all the time about the project. We used video cameras to capture some important information. Our library had many encyclopedias that we used. Each tool was unique and important to finishing it.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your Doors to Diplomacy project both on-line and in person.

We like to spread the word. We all let our families know and we presented the project to the school. We learned so much and are so happy to share this with the school.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We hope to make a difference in the way people look at hunger. Hopefully they will use some of the links to other websites where you can donate money or food to help the poor get food.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In our website we interviewed some kindergartners at our school about what they eat for lunch or what they get for snack.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

There were interesting facts that we found while researching food insecurity. We learned lots of websites to use to help hunger, like Feeding America and Free Rice. We also thought that it was interesting that if you are poor you usually have a better chance to gain weight then people who have money to buy good food. You can check out our website if you want to learn more!
