Project Description: Lawang Sewu is a historical building in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. The name "Lawang Sewu" translates to "Thousand Doors" in Javanese, although the building doesn't actually have a thousand doors. The name is more symbolic, referring to the numerous doors and windows of the complex. Lawang Sewu was built during the Dutch colonial period in the early 20th century. Originally, it served as the headquarters of the Dutch East Indies Railway Company (Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij or NIS) and was designed by the Dutch architect Cosman Citroen. The architectural style of Lawang Sewu is a blend of Dutch and Javanese influences. The building is characterized by its large central dome and the numerous doors and windows that give it its name. Today, Lawang Sewu is a popular tourist attraction and is open to the public. Visitors can explore the building and learn about its history, architecture, and the role it played during different periods in Indonesian history.
