Description of Our Community: Lukang is an ancient town located in the northern part of the Changhua plain. In the 17th century, it was a hub of commerce and culture, honored as the second greatest city in Taiwan ("First Tainan, Second Lukang, Third Mengjia"). The town is famous for its winding alleys, historic temples, and unique food culture. Our project focuses on the specific culinary traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival in Lukang, where food is not just for eating, but also carries deep meanings of ancient mythology and prayer for good weather.
Project Description: In Lukang, eating "Jian Dui" (Fry Cake) on the Dragon Boat Festival is a unique tradition derived from the legend of "Nuwa Mends the Sky." Locals believe that eating these round, soft pancakes symbolizes mending the sky to stop the heavy plum rains. Unlike the thick "Man Jian Dui" sold daily, this "Dragon Boat Festival Limited" version is thin, crispy on the outside, and soft inside, with sweet or salty flavors. Our team, the "Lukang Sky-Mending Squad," collaborated with the Chenghuang Temple to learn the process of making Jian Duiāfrom washing vegetables to mastering the flipping technique. We also interviewed volunteers and locals. Through the CyberFair project, we aim to record this disappearing "one-day limited" delicacy and promote the spirit of "mending the sky" through modern environmental actions on campus.
