Description of Our Community: Wanhua is one of the earliest developed areas in Taipei, so it has become an old district today. However, the government has been working hard to transform it. Because of this, we have the lively area of Ximending, a popular place for teenagers to listen to street performers and enjoy new, trendy music. This makes the old district feel young and active again.
At the same time, Wanhua is also home to Longshan Temple and Qingshan Temple, which carry deep cultural meaning and reflect the religious spirit of the local people. During festivals and religious events, the energetic Electric-Techno Neon Gods performance is becoming more and more popular, while traditional glove puppetry is slowly seen less often. This makes our teammate, who is learning glove puppetry, feel a bit sad.
Project Description: Regarding our project, our team chose glove puppetry because our members enjoy it and have collected many puppet figures. We even invited one member’s teacher to our school to show us how to make the puppets wave their hands, turn their bodies, and even do flips. This helped us understand the performing skills more deeply.
We also read Masters of Puppet Art: The Glove Puppetry Legacy of the Ximen Troupe to learn about the rise and decline of glove puppetry in different parts of Taiwan. In addition to presenting our research, our school’s bilingual drama program will create a performance based on our study. Through this, we hope to encourage people to appreciate the beauty of both traditional and modern styles.
